NBC News correspondents and producers across the U.S. shed light on the news of the day.

WASHINGTON - The wave of immigrants entering the United States slowed dramatically last year as the economy faltered and the government stepped up enforcement of immigration laws.

The nation added about a half million immigrants in 2007, down from more than 1.8 million the year before, according to estimates being released Tuesday by the Census Bureau.

"The U.S. is still a beacon for many people who want to come here for all kinds of reasons," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who analyzed the numbers. "But what this shows is that the economy plays a big part in it."

The U.S. has added an average of about a million immigrants a year since 1990, including those in the country legally and illegally.

At more than 38 million, the number of immigrants in the U.S. is now at an all-time high. Immigrants made up 12.6 percent of the population in 2007, the largest share since 1920, when the U.S. was nearing the end of its last immigration boom, one that brought millions of people from Europe to the United States.

Looking for jobsThe immigration figures released Tuesday were from the 2007 American Community Survey, the government's annual survey of about 3 million households. I might be reaching but that sounds like you are expecting our government to turn socialist, and we all know who must in office for that to happen.

BTW that Russian girl escapes my name at the moment "The Hot Word Girl"

She said growing up in Russia socialists are considered lazy because they do less work and expect to get the same treatments, everyone shares everything money, food, everything is equal, she said people get upset and say why should I work as hard if I get paid the same.

We all know who has the socialist tax plan...

I was thinking mainly of all the mentions of a depression that I've heard lately. With the bail outs and increased government involvement, it makes me wonder if we aren't slowly developing into that by constantly staving off market "corrections". They seem to build up over time. To keep from paying the fiddler, we seem to be risking our free enterprise system. Then again, I am from Louisiana and by the personality map story, I am neurotic. LOL

I'd like the original source article to break down how much of the decrease is illegal immigration and how much is legal immigration. A sharp cut in legal immigration is a very bad sign because America is built on innovation that the many different groups bring.

This is true. Actually, it is an absolute necessity in a global economy where more smart people have more of a choice of where they choose to live.
