The candid letter, marked as containing "sensitive judgements" and requesting officials to "protect the contents carefully" gives a remarkable insight into how the Foreign Office views the political phenomenon who stunned Mr Brown's inner circle by defeating their favourite, Hillary Clinton, in the Democratic primaries.

The letter's contents suggest that Mr Brown could initially find it difficult to deal with a President Obama because he remains a largely unknown quantity who "resists pigeon-holing" and the leak is likely to complicate relations.
Last month, the Prime Minister was forced to backtrack after an article written in his name broke with convention by showering praise on the Democratic candidate at the expense of his Republican rival, Senator John McCain of Arizona.
Sir Nigel traces the ambition of Mr Obama, 47, to reach the White House right back to his 20s or before. "He has talked at least since the 1980s about a shot at the Presidency."
He also identifies several political vulnerabilities that Sen McCain will seek to exploit in the last month of his campaign against the Illinois senator. The leaked letter will provide him with welcome ammunition.
Mr Obama "can seem to sit on the fence, assiduously balancing pros and cons", Sir Nigel wrote, and "does betray a highly educated and upper middle class mindset"...." co.uk
i don't want to take away the ambassador's opinion, but i really don't believe that obama is "aloof". he seems on top of things. he may not have experience, but i think he is a smart guy.
Well he said good things and he has said bad, aloof is a common thing people see in Obama, lately I have not seen it though, only during the Democratic Primary.
Oh, Climate Change...you infect here as well with your lack of knowledge and idiotic attempts at stupid humor (along with your complete lack of grasp of the issues)
By the way, have you noticed how your sacred saint, Sarah "the dog in lipstick" Palin has absolutely refuted your silly assumptions on, um, climate change?
You sir, have become a joke...

Amusing...a member of the famously aloof British Aristocracy is calling an extremely educated individual from the American middle class as 'aloof'?
I think I spotted my jeans laughing!

this word "aloof" irritates me. i don't think Sir Nigel is accustom to the intelligence of the well educated black man.
i just think its bad when an allie says it could be difficult to work with our (potential) president...i bet our enemies would love that, hear that iran, osama????
I beg to differ B there are more educated black men in the UK, not only but in positions of power, also interacial relationships are much more open there, if anything they have more tolerance than we do.
well everyone has their own opinion about a person. that's their right. one person my dislike you and the next may love you.
did you read the whole thing?
He said good and bad things, this was more of a assessment than anything.

This is a unbiased view of Obama, he says good things and he says bad, it's just interesting to see how someone not in American politics views him.
