For those of you about to avert your eyes, let me just say that “The Happening” is a big snooze, riddled with awful dialogue and unconvincing performances, all underlined by a dreadful score by James Newton Howard, a composer whose vocabulary is missing the phrase “on the nose.” If this was the movie to rescue the reputation of self-styled genius Shyamalan after the disaster of “Lady in the Water,” then it’s back to the old drawing board...." msn.com
A Season
The only one of his movies that was even remotely interesting was "Sixth Sence" and I think it was the cast that really made that movie..."The Village" has got to be the worst movie I have seen in a very long time. I pretty much refuse to waste my money to see another one of his box office bombs...
I've seen this film at a press premiere here in Chicago. It's Shyamalan’s best film yet... Walburg and Deschanel are perfectly cast and if I can find fault with it, maybe Shyamalan tried a little too hard to make up for past disappointments by going over the top a little too much. But boring and dull? Nope... not this one! It definitely makes you forget he ever did 'The Village'!
I agree. I love M. Night Shyamalan's work, the only movie I can't vouch for is Unbreakable because I haven't see it. But I think he's an awesome direct, and he has original ideas, unlike some people. I saw this last night and to be quite honest, when I reflected on it at bedtime I got all creeped out hearing the wind outside, lol.
I don't care what ya say I love his work so pffffft. lol
I like The Village until the end. After that it kinda ruined it for me. I was laughing throughout the whole thing cuz of how stupid they were. lol I'm a dork.
oh and go watch Unbreakable....I loved it.

that's kinda my point, his latest films have been so stupid, they're funny. When a self-proclaimed "horror movie genius" puts out a "horror" movie, I'm expecting (or rather hoping) to be...well...Scared?
I saw an Japanese film with a similar vibe I hope it is as good as that one. PLUS he is basically going to have to serve me breakfast in bed to make up for The Village
BlondeAquarius said "Shit....that was supposed to be a horror movie? Thought it was comedy....dammit...."
I liked The Village, but it's not my favorite, it was kind of disappointing in a way.

haha.. yeah, it'll be awhile before I can hear the wind blowing w/o thinking of this film!
Actually, he never proclaimed himself or even thinks of himself as a "horror movie genius" or even in the horror movie genre. After seeing and doing interviews with Night Shyamalan, he more fashions himself a definite suspense-genre director, but no where near the scale of a Hitchcock. He is probably the most prepared director because he has a library of like, every movie ever made in his head. He knows what works to build suspense. Build up the suspense as much as possible and nail you in the face with the surprise at the end. None of his films have had any gore, heads getting chopped off, chainsaws buzzing through limbs, etc.-what would be considered horror. But they've all been suspenseful, even if the ending was as bad as, "it was all a dream!" in 'The Village').
I'll agree he knows how to build suspense, it's what to do with it once it's built that seems to completely elude him. As far as it not being horror, close enough. What you're listing as horror is more gore, any horror movie buff knows there's a difference.
Signs and Sixth Sense would fall into Horror more than just Suspense...

Not really a surprise. I loved Sixth Sense and Signs but I've found the rest of his movies to be dull and just too far out there (i.e. "The Village" - I actually fell asleep in the theater)
