That raised the total for Sony's "Hancock" to $107.3 million since it opened Tuesday night to get a jump on the holiday.
It was a familiar place for Smith, one of Hollywood's most-consistent draws. "Hancock" is his fifth movie to open at No. 1 over the Fourth of July. The others were "Men in Black" and its sequel, "Independence Day" and "Wild Wild West."
"Will Smith, Mom, apple pie and the Fourth of July. It doesn't get any better," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "People just so relate to him and the characters that he plays. They totally embraced it as something different, something fresh."

It seems the movies the critics slam usually end up doing a hellofa lot better than expected.
Heard that bro heard that, I gave up listening to ANYTHING the critics have to say, I let my own judgement dictate what I intend to watch, I saw the preview for Hancock, I saw comedy and I saw action, made up my mind to watch it, and I wasnt disappointed, I'm waitin for em to call me to write the sequel ;)

I hate the critics, i just got back from seeing the movie and it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! Im going to see it again tomorrow. Way to go WILL !!!!
jason bateman is a wonderful actor...his timing and comedic value always adds sweetness to the pot!
