The Federal Communications Commission voted 3-2 to approve the buyout, with the tiebreaker coming Friday night from Republican commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate.
Tate had insisted that the companies settle charges that they violated FCC rules before she would approve the deal. The companies agreed this week to pay $19.7 million to the U.S. Treasury for violations related to radio receivers and ground-based signal repeaters.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin confirmed the final vote Friday night.
"I think it's going to be, in the end, a good thing for consumers and be in the public interest," Martin told The Associated Press. "Consumers will enjoy a variety of programming at reduced prices and more diversified programming choices."

the FTC isn't there to protect the John Q Public, it is there to protect the major companies and their interests. Seriously.

it's not a monopoly because their gonna help xm.. it's basically the bill gates play with him helping apple
lol like Sprint helped Nextel? - "Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.'s $3.3 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. will mean 18 million-plus subscribers will be able to receive programming from both services. Executives say it will mean huge cost savings that will lead to a first-ever profit for the relatively nascent industry."
It's a buyout, not a merger and certainly not a loan or venture capital.

The difference between your comparison, mine and the XM/Sirius Radio Merger, is that when Microsoft helped Apple, Apple remained it's own company. That was not the case with Sprint/Nextel & it's not the case here.
When you have 2 Satellite Radio Stations & one buys the other - you, logically have 1 Satellite Radio Station Left - what's that called? A Monopoly.

This is in no way a monopoly-no one makes you pay for satellite radio-IT IS A PAY SERVICE-you should be more upset by the merger or Exxon-Mobile that went thru without the slightest public outcry of "monopoly"-I need gas-I don't have to pay for music or talk radio-their still is that free radio in your car-if you can listen to that.
By definition, monopoly is characterized by an absence of competition which often results in high prices and inferior products.
Sirius no longer has competition and does not have to offer a lower price to keep and/or gain customers. Expect their 12.95 a month rate to go up.
