"Harry Potter author J.K. ROWLING has donated $1.83 million (GBP1million) to the British government to boost U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown's fight for political survival.
Rowling decided to offer the cash to the ruling Labour party because she believes they will help struggling single parent families more than their rival Conservatives.
The author, who has raked in a huge fortune through her massively popular wizard books, wrote the first story, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, when she was a single parent living in rented accomodation in Edinburgh, Scotland.
She insists she understands the needs of single mothers - and doesn't agree with the Conservative party's promises to offer married couples tax-breaks if they get voted into power.
